Gingivitis to perio

Periodontitis is a disease of the gums. It begins with bacterial growth in your mouth and, if left untreated, it will end up causing your teeth to become loose and eventually fall out.

Gingivitis, which is gum inflammation, is usually the beginning stage of periodontitis.

Caused by:
Untreated gingivitis

Symptoms:
Bleeding, swollen gums,
Bad breath or bad taste.
Receding gums
Loosening or shifting teeth.
General mouth sensitivity or even pain

What’s Happening?
The inner layer of the gum and the bone is pulling away from the tooth. The body fights the infection, and more bone and connective tissue is lost until the tooth becomes loose.

Take action!
In the early stages of periodontitis the damage can be halted so that it does not progress further. By the late periodontitis stage reversing the damage is impossible. Surgery can sometimes help to stabilise the gums and teeth.

Gingivitis

Caused by:
Build up of plaque and bacteria irritates the gum

Symptoms:
Blood when brushing
flossing or eating hard food

What’s happening?
The gums are reacting to a mild infection. The bone remains intact.
Take action! This is reversible. Get a professional cleaning and ask your dentist what can be done to halt your infection.

Who is at risk
Plaque is the root cause of gingivitis. So a professional cleaning every 6 months, regular brushing with a soft brush and daily flossing will eliminate your risk.
